    Suggestions for use:
To play most of the games listed below players will need tokens, die, and question cards.  Questions read orally by the teacher can be used to replace the question cards.  The basic premise for using the games listed below is as follows:

    1. Player rolls die or spins to determine number of moves (a Printable Spinner, Large Dice, and Small Dice are available for download).
    2.   Player does not move until he answers the question on the game card drawn.
    3. Player is then given a question either orally or from printed card.  Questions could include vocabulary, spelling, science, social studies, or Word Wall words. A good source for questions can be found at Quia (http://www.quia.com/web).  Using Internet Explorer, questions found online can be copied and pasted on the game cards.
    4. These cards can be created in Word using the Game Card Template.  The game cards can be printed on Avery Business Cards #5376 which can be folded and separated for use. A template is also available for Avery Business Card 8371, Avery Business Card 27881,and Avery 5371.   Several cards have been created and can be found at this website.

How to Make Your Own Board Game

A board game
A board game

Do you want a fun board game to play but none interest you? There's always the option of making one!

[edit] Steps

  1. Find a piece of cardboard, display board, or anything you want to mount your game on.
  2. Add a starting point anywhere you want.
  3. Draw a constant shape throughout the board to be your traveling spaces, and make a trail to the finish.
  4. Put in events, like going to jail, moving backwards or forwards, and/or collecting items. Use your imagination for this step.
  5. Incorporate cards in your game, if you'd like. Draw or type cards on heavy card stock paper. (examples: Hit three green lights in a row - move ahead twelve spaces; Flat tire - lose two turns while repairing it, etc).
  6. Test the game alone or with your friends. Change things to improve it. Make sure it is not too hard or easy.
  7. Cut small figures out of paper, use legos, or find other building material to use as game pieces. As an alternative, you can use game pieces from another card game, or even use small household items.
  8. Ask other people their advice to get ideas.
  9. Make it colorful and eye-popping. Use colored pencil, markers, or even paint.
  10. Name it! Come up with something creative and original.

[edit] Tips

  • Model the game board after a map, music note, or movie.. For example, if you are doing this based on a city, you could involve stores from it.
  • Add spaces that take you to other spaces or triple of your next roll. Use your imagination.
  • Have more than just one objective. This keeps the game interesting after multiple plays.
  • Play around with rules. Rather than moving a set number of spaces, for example, have a player be allowed to move freely for a set time period.
  • Have an objective instead of a finish space -- land on the water fountain 10 times, collect all the gold pieces, etc.
  • Use variations of colors and patterns for an interesting appearance.
  • Ask for a clean takeout pizza box from a restaurant or buy some from a restaurant supply for the base.
  • Minute timers, dice with 6 to 32 sides, and replacement playing pieces are available at game and comic book stores.
  • For really young players, instead of a standard dice with numbers, you can make a dice which corresponds to the colors of the game spaces, or make cards that show which color to move to (like in CandyLand).
  • Make it 3D!
  • Use a ruler when drawing in order to make it look nice and professional.
  • Don't rush, but don't do it at the last minute.
  • Get other opinions before you finalize it.
  • Once you've put on your final touches, you can laminate it or put on a large piece of clear tape to protect it.
  • Make it fun -- no one will play it if it is boring!
  • You can make an end spot, or you can make it loop like Monopoly.
  • Make it unique -- people won't want to play it too much if it's already been done.

[edit] Warnings

  • Make the game fair with constant rules.
  • Anything 3D should be done on sturdy paper.

[edit] Things You'll Need

  • A mount (i.e. pizza box, cardboard, display board, etc.)
  • Characters (can be anything from clay to pieces of paper)
  • Dice (optional)
  • Card stock (if you are going to use cards)
