Pass It On Game & Workbook

Introduction and Overview

Hello and Welcome to the Pass it On Student Mentoring Program!

The goal of this program is for every student to have an opportunity to have a mentor and to be a mentor! This program will be an after school class held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30PM to 5:30PM and will run for the entire semester.

Participation in this program will both help empower and help you realize that you can make a positive difference in others lives.

All students that are interested in participating in this PIO Student Mentoring Program will be asked to pick one subject/activity in which he/she can mentor a younger student. Could it be with math? Reading. At the same time, you may also state in which area you would like to be mentored by an older student.

If you choose to be a mentor, you will be asked to attend mentor training to prepare you as a mentor before the program begins. Next, mentors and protégés will be matched up with the mentor/protégé of their choice. Students will have the option to participate as mentors as well as protégés. You will be given a workbook that you will be able to keep notes in on your protégé as you get to know them.

After training and the mentor/protégé match-up the fun begins! The first hour, from 3:30- 4:30 pm will be a combination of snack/social time, helping with homework, playing the Mentoring Connection Game and recording in your workbooks. The second hour from 4:30 – 5:30 pm, there will be a group presentation that everyone will attend, with fun activities that you will participate in within small groups.

We will have adult mentors to monitor and oversee the after school class and to assist with questions, the activities, etc.

At the end of the program, you may have the option of re-signing up for the next semester. You may also want the opportunity to “switch rolls” - become a mentor or protégé.

Thank you and welcome to the Pass it On Student Mentoring Program

GETTING STARTED

GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER!

The following questions are to be answered by both mentor and protégé. You will begin by “interviewing” one another and recording the answers in your workbook. The workbooks will be turned in at the end of every class, and signed out back to you at the beginning of each class. The mentor and protégé will only see this information, so please share freely with one another.

What is your name?

Do you have a nickname?

Where were you born?

What grade are you in?

What is your favorite subject?

What is your least favorite subject?

What is your favorite TV show?

What are your hobbies/interests?

What kind of music do you listen to?

What is your favorite color?

Do you have any brothers or sisters?

When is your birthday?

Do you have any pets?

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

Who is your favorite sports team?

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Within each section, there are related questions on cards that the mentor/protégés will answer if they “land” on that spot. Also included within each section are “Character values” - if you land on one of those, you will be directed to a page # in your workbook that corresponds to the category you are playing. For example if you land on the character value “Honesty” in the red category, you will go to the page # on that Value in your workbook and answer the question. In addition, you will be asked to rate that value on a scale from 1 to 10 on how import that value is to you.

This workbook will be divided into the above five sections. As you play the game, you will be focusing on one section of the game each time you meet. The mentor/protégé can both decide together which section they would like to work on that particular day. You can spend anywhere from a few minutes to a whole hour on the game, or you can choose to do homework, etc, instead.

There will be adult mentors available to assist you as needed. Both mentor/protégés will be recording each other’s information in their workbooks each time you meet. The workbooks will be turned in at the end of each class and picked up at the beginning of the next class.

HOW TO PLAY THE PASS IT ON MENTORING CONNECTION GAME

1.   Place the colored cards on the board over the corresponding picture.

2.   The players will choose which category that day that they will play. After 5 sessions both players will have played all five.

3.   Each player rolls a die.  The highest number will go first. (The highest number on the dice is a three.)

4.   Players roll a die and advance around the category chosen, (for example: Red is Situation) by moving the number of spaces shown on the die.  Once you land on a square, take the top card of that category and answer the question.  When finished answering the question, place the card on the bottom of the stack.

5.   Should you land on a space that places you on a character value, you will go to the page # on that value in your workbook and follow the directions. Then your turn is over.

6.   Be respectful of each player when they are taking their turn.
